Shoulder

The shoulder service of the department of orthopaedic surgery treats a wide variety of disorders ranging from athletic injuries to degenerative and arthritic conditions.  Our physicians specialize in the treatment of rotator cuff disease, shoulder dislocations, shoulder arthritis, fractures about the shoulder and elbow, as well as sports related shoulder injuries.  The primary goal in the treatment of any shoulder disorder is to alleviate pain and restore function as quickly as possible.

The shoulder service at Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) includes two subspecialty-trained surgeons who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of shoulder and elbow problems.  Dr. Brent Wiesel is the chief of the shoulder service.  Dr. Wiesel completed his residency at the University of Pennsylvania and an additional year of training in shoulder and elbow surgery at the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia.  Dr. John Klimikiewcz is the chief of the sports medicine service at GUMC and the head physician for the Georgetown University athletic teams.  He also trained at the University of Pennsylvania prior to an additional year of training in sports medicine at the University of Pittsburg Medical Center.

In addition to "open" surgical procedures, these surgeons specialize in minimally invasive and arthroscopic surgery.  They have expertise in emerging techniques for the treatment of shoulder disorders including arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and reverse shoulder arthroplasty.  All patients receive a physician-directed rehabilitation program that is designed to maximize outcome based on each patient's goals.

In addition to excellence in clinical care, the shoulder service is also actively involved in research aimed at improving the understanding and treatment of disorders about the shoulder and elbow.
